Review office etiquette, department culture, job expectations and job description with new employee(s).
Depending on the new employee’s role, it may be helpful to create a one-to-two week schedule for their onboarding purposes. Some items to include in their few few weeks include:
- Facility or work space tour, as applicable.
- Schedule a meeting for the new employee with an administrative staff member in your department to review processes the new staff may engage in with this staff member.
- Schedule a meeting for the new employee with departmental leadership. Prior to this meeting, request the meeting with your leadership with an explicit purpose (review staff expectations, mission, vision, values, etc.).
- Schedule a time the new staff member can go to Uniform Management Services to select a welcome item from their selection. It is encouraged for departments to coordinate a credit to the Uniform Management Services, but this is not required. Departments shall work with Business Services to determine what can be budgeted in for this welcome gift in the department’s annual budget. Make an appointment with Uniform Management Services.
Other than outlining some scheduled meetings within the first few weeks, it is often helpful if the hiring manager makes some suggestions on how new employees spend their time for the first few days. This will provide some direction and allow flexibility for the new staff member to guide their own learning.
Request access and provide training on department specific systems and duties.
Work with the new staff member to order business cards. Note: supervisor approval is required prior to ordering business cards.
Compliance Training
Allow time in the new employees day to complete compliance training vis LMS. This includes, but is not limited to, FERPA training, cybersecurity awareness training, managing conflicts of interest training, equal opportunity training, sexual misconduct training and Title IX training. Each staff member will be automatically assigned to any training they need to complete in their LMS system. For more information on these trainings, please visit the Compliance, Ethics and Regulatory Affairs website.
UA Sites
It may be helpful to set aside some time to review UA wide platforms or informal benefits with new staff, such as MyBama, WellBama, Bama Perks, the Faculty/Staff Clinic, the Office of Information Technology and others.
During this time, the new staff member should also create an email signature. For more information on this, view the Division of Strategic Communications website.
